Ljubljana to Lake Bled: Day Trip Guide (Bus, Train, Car & Tours)

Lake Bled is the most popular day trip from Ljubljana, and for good reason: it’s under an hour away, and one well-planned day is enough for the island, the castle, a viewpoint hike and a cream cake. Option 1: Bus (easiest)

Direct buses leave Ljubljana bus station (next to the railway station) roughly every hour, take about 75–80 minutes and cost around €7–9 each way. Crucially, the bus stops in Bled town centre, five minutes’ walk from the lake. In summer, buy tickets online a day ahead — morning buses fill up. This is the best option for most visitors.

Option 2: Train (most scenic arrival)

Trains run from Ljubljana to Lesce–Bled station (about 40–60 minutes, €5–7), which is 4 km from the lake with a connecting local bus every 15 minutes. A second station, Bled Jezero, sits just 10 minutes’ walk from the western shore but is served by the slower, spectacularly scenic Bohinj railway line. If timings align, arriving at Bled Jezero is a lovely start to the day.

Option 3: Car (most flexible)

The drive takes 40 minutes via the A2 motorway (vignette required). Flexibility is great — you can add Vintgar Gorge or Lake Bohinj — but summer parking is the catch: central car parks fill by 10 am and cost up to €15/day. Option 4: Organised tours

Half- and full-day tours from Ljubljana (typically €40–70) bundle transport with a guide, often combining Bled with Bohinj or Vintgar. Good if your time is tight, but you’ll trade away flexibility — and Bled is genuinely easy to do independently.

The perfect one-day itinerary

8.30 — Arrive, coffee on the promenade while the town is quiet.
9.00 — Climb Ojstrica (45 min) for the classic view before the light flattens.
10.30 — Rent a rowing boat to the island, ring the wishing bell.
12.30 — Lunch at a traditional gostilna — see where to eat.
14.00 — Bled Castle: museum, ramparts and that terrace.
16.00 — Cream cake with a lake view (you’ve earned it).
17.00 — Either the lake loop walk, or squeeze in summer tobogganing with the kids before the bus home.

Should you stay overnight instead?

If you can, yes. Bled at 7 am and after 6 pm — without the day-trip crowds — is a different place entirely. An overnight stay also unlocks the early slots for rafting and other activities that day-trippers miss.
