Slovenia's oldest castle on a 130-metre cliff — museum, castle print shop and the finest terrace for miles.
Bled Castle is Slovenia’s oldest — first mentioned in 1011 as castellum Veldes in a deed of Emperor Henry II granting it to the Bishops of Brixen, who ruled the castle and the Bled estate for nearly 800 years. The oldest part is the Romanesque defence tower, while the buildings around the two courtyards gained Renaissance and Baroque features over the centuries.
Perched on a sheer 130-metre cliff, the castle was practically impregnable — in a thousand years it was never taken. After the secularisation of the Brixen estate in 1803 it changed owners several times, hosted Rikli’s health resort, and after World War II was nationalised and converted into a museum.
Today the complex houses museum collections on Bled’s history, a print shop with a replica Gutenberg press, a wine cellar, a forge and a restaurant whose terrace serves the view that made Bled world-famous.
