About the experience

Description

Renting a wooden rowing boat is the most authentic way to visit Bled Island: instead of sharing a pletna with twenty other passengers, you are your own captain — row at your own pace, land on the island and stay as long as you like. Motor boats are banned on the lake, so rowing is calm and safe even for first-timers.

To Bled Island at Your Own Pace

From Mlino you row to the island in just 15–20 minutes; from the north shore below the castle it takes a good half hour. The island is the only place on the lake where landing is allowed — tie up at the jetty by the baroque staircase. For the row over, the 99 steps, a visit to the church with the wishing bell and the return, allow one and a half to two hours.

Every Boat Rental Location on Lake Bled

Traditional wooden rowing boats are rented out by three boathouses — each with its own character and its own pricing logic:

Pension Pletna, Mlino — Cheapest & Closest to the Island

The boathouse by Pension Pletna (Cesta svobode 37) is the price winner: 3-seat boat ~€12/hour, 5-seat ~€17/hour, open daily throughout the season. Mlino also has the shortest row to the island — the ideal pick if landing on the island is your main goal.

Castle Boathouse — Rowing Beneath the Castle Rock

At Veslaška promenada 11, right next to the Castle Lido below the castle. The pricing rewards longer rentals: 3-seat boat €15 for the first hour, then €8/hour; 5-seat €18, then €10/hour. Open May to September, 10:00–18:00. The island is a 25–30 minute row away — with the castle towering above you the whole way.

Grand Hotel Toplice — the Elegant Central Option

The Toplice boathouse (Cesta svobode 12) operates daily; an hour of rowing costs €15–20, and hotel guests get the first hour free. It is the most central starting point — you step in practically from the promenade.

West Shore (Velika & Mala Zaka) — Kayaks and SUPs

In Zaka bay you generally won’t find wooden rowing boats — but it is the hub for kayak rental (from ~€15/hour; the Castle Lido also rents kayaks: single €20, double €25 for the first hour) and SUP rental (from ~€10–12/hour). If a paddle suits you better than oars, this is your end of the lake.

Best Time to Row & Good to Know

The most beautiful light for photos from the water comes in the morning or in the last hour before sunset, when the surface calms and the crowds thin out. On midsummer afternoons the lake is at its busiest with boats and pletnas — stick closer to the shoreline then. Storms empty the lake quickly; check the weather on our Bled Live page before setting out.

💡 Lake feeling too small? Spend the next day exploring the rest of the Julian Alps on a full-day trip to Kranjska Gora, Bovec and Bohinj (from €140) — guided, with pickup in Bled.
