Getting Married at Lake Bled: The Complete Guide (Venues, Prices & Traditions)
Few places on earth need zero staging for a wedding photo: an island church in an emerald lake, a thousand-year-old castle on the cliff above it, and the Julian Alps behind. That’s why Bled ranks among Europe’s most desired wedding destinations — and exactly why it rewards good planning. As locals, we’ve gathered everything you need to know: venues with prices, paperwork, traditions, and the details that separate a lovely wedding from a perfect one.
Why a Lake Bled wedding is magical
Because it comes with rituals no other destination has. The bride arrives at the island by pletna, the traditional wooden boat rowed by a local oarsman. Before the church wait 99 stone steps — and tradition says the groom must carry his bride up all of them; managing it proves he’s worthy of the marriage (the bride must stay silent throughout — which locals insist is the harder half of the task). At the top hangs the wishing bell: ring it, make a wish, and legend says it comes true. All of it in light that photographers call the finest in the Alps.
Venues: all your options
Church wedding on Bled Island
A wedding in the island’s Church of the Assumption is the classic of classics. Catholic weddings require paperwork through your home parish; book the island as early as you can — summer Saturdays sell out a year or more ahead. The island is managed by the Bled Culture Institute (wedding info: blejskiotok.si, tel. +386 4 576 79 79). Wedding parties cross to the island by pletna boats — a scene your guests will never forget.
Civil ceremony at Bled Castle
Slovenia’s oldest castle hosts civil ceremonies in the Knights’ Hall, with the reception on the castle terrace high above the lake. Operator’s guide prices: the base wedding-hall package (a ~45-minute ceremony with chairs, sparkling wine and guest admission) around €2,500, with a terrace surcharge of roughly €980 for parties over 100. Catering is by the renowned Jezeršek house — the Castle Restaurant, menus from about €50 per person. Bookings: Bled Castle Weddings, weddings@zkbled.si, +386 41 599 196; dates and prices at blejski-grad.si.
Lakeside and open-air ceremonies
Civil ceremonies can also be held at a location of your choice by the lake — on the shore, in the park of Vila Bled (Tito’s former residence facing the island) or at a viewpoint. For ceremonies outside official premises the administrative unit charges around €170, and you need the venue owner’s written consent plus timely registration. For elopements, sunrise ceremonies at a viewpoint are increasingly popular — just the couple, the registrar, a photographer and the rising sun.
Paperwork: what you need
You register the marriage at the administrative unit no less than 14 days and no more than 3 months before the wedding. Foreign couples typically need birth certificates, proof of citizenship and a certificate of no impediment (plus divorce documents where applicable), usually apostilled and officially translated — confirm exact requirements with the Radovljica Administrative Unit, which covers Bled. Administrative fees are modest (application ~€18); the main cost is the ~€170 fee for an outside-premises ceremony. Many foreign couples handle the legal part at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Bled — zero paperwork, identical photos.
The photographer: a decision you’ll look at forever
In Bled a photographer isn’t a cost — it’s the investment, and choosing the wrong one is couples’ most common regret. Why the choice matters extra here: Bled’s light is specific (morning mist over the lake, harsh midday contrast, a golden hour that sets the castle rock on fire), and local photographers know when and where to stand. The classic wedding photo itinerary: preparations, the pletna arrival, the ceremony, golden-hour portraits at the Ojstrica or Osojnica viewpoints (a 45-minute climb — in wedding shoes, an experienced guide helps!), and evening shots of the illuminated castle. When choosing: ask for complete galleries (not highlight reels), check for genuine Bled experience, and discuss permits — drone flying over the lake is restricted, and local photographers know how to arrange it.
The wedding dinner
For parties up to 100+, the natural choice is the Castle Restaurant right at the ceremony venue; for an elegant dinner in town, the top addresses are Restaurant 1906 (TripAdvisor 4.5, listed in the Michelin Guide) and Wine Bar & Restaurant Sova with its premium wine list and a touch of the Orient. For your guests: make it unforgettable for them too
A destination wedding doubles as your guests’ mini holiday. The day before, we can arrange a rafting regatta or an ATV tour for the party — and the morning after, send the newlyweds up on a sunrise balloon flight over the lake. It’s hard to imagine a better first morning of a marriage.
When to book
Summer Saturdays on the island and at the castle sell out 12–18 months ahead; May, June and September are the sweet spot between weather and availability, while winter weddings (a snow-dusted castle!) are kinder on the budget and dreamlike on camera. Fridays and Sundays are far easier to get than Saturdays.
