The highest peak of the Karavanke (2,236 m) — a royal view of Lake Bled on one side of the ridge and Austrian Carinthia on the other.
Stol (2,236 m) is the highest summit of the Karavanke range and the mountain you see from Bled every day — now you can climb it too. The summit serves a double panorama: Lake Bled, the Julian Alps and all of Gorenjska to the south; Austrian Carinthia with Lake Wörthersee plunging away to the north.
The classic route starts below the Valvasor hut above Žirovnica. A good three hours of steady, well-marked climbing lead to the Prešeren hut just below the summit; the final 20 minutes are rocky but not difficult. With 1,250 vertical metres this is a genuine mountain tour requiring good fitness and proper boots.
The Prešeren hut — the highest in the Karavanke — serves hearty stew and štruklji in summer. For the descent you can loop over the Žirovnica pasture. The trailhead is 15 minutes’ drive from Bled.
