Via Ferrata in Slovenia: Mojstrana, the Julian Alps & Where to Start
Slovenia came late to the via ferrata boom, which is good news: the routes are modern, well maintained and blissfully uncrowded compared with the Dolomites next door. The best starting point sits 25 minutes from Bled, on the cliff of Grančišče above the mountaineering village of Mojstrana — gateway to the Triglav valleys.
Via Ferrata Mojstrana: Two Routes on One Wall
The Grančišče wall carries two secured routes, each about 180 m high and 250 m long, finishing on the same summit with views over the Julian Alps and Karavanke:
- Aljaž Route (grade B) — the family ferrata: steady, well protected, a perfect first taste of climbing on cables for kids and beginners.
- Mojstrana Squirrels Route (grade C/D) — the adrenaline line: overhanging sections, rungs over air, real arm strength needed.
Descent is on a marked walking path back to the start; count on 2–3 hours for the round trip. The routes are closed from 31 October to 1 April.
Gear & Guides
You need a helmet, harness and an energy-absorbing via ferrata set — never improvise with a plain sling. Rental is available in Mojstrana itself (the Slovenian Alpine Museum and Kofler Sport both hire complete sets), and local IFMGA guides run half-day trips if you would rather have the technique shown properly. Confident scramblers who enjoy this will also like the protected summit paths we flag in our hiking guides, and proper rock climbing near Bled is the natural next step.
Other Via Ferratas in Slovenia
Beyond Mojstrana, Slovenia’s classics range from secured alpine scrambles like Mala Mojstrovka above the Vršič pass to the airy ledges of Mangart — though on the big peaks the line between “via ferrata” and a Slovenian secured path blurs, and alpine experience matters as much as gear. For a first trip, Mojstrana is the honest recommendation: short approach, real exposure, easy retreat.
Making a Day of It
Pair the ferrata with the Peričnik waterfall and the Vrata valley beneath Triglav’s north face — the full plan is in our Triglav guide — or fold it into day three of a longer Bled itinerary. You will be back at the lake in time for a well-earned cream cake.
