Planina Uskovnica (1,154 m) on the south-western rim of Pokljuka is a living alpine pasture: cows graze the meadows in summer, the photogenic Chapel of Mary of the Snows stands among scattered herders’ huts, and the Uskovnica hut serves home-made štruklji dumplings. Views run across the Bohinj mountains to Triglav.
The classic trail starts in Srednja vas in Bohinj: a good 1.5 hours of moderate climbing on forest paths and herders’ tracks. A forest road lets you drive most of the way if you’re short on time. Uskovnica rewards a visit in every season — on snowshoes or a sled it is one of the loveliest family winter outings around Bohinj.
