About the trail

Trail description

Begunjščica, topping out at Veliki vrh (2,060 m), is the grassy queen of the Karavanke above Begunje — and in May, when its slopes turn white with wild daffodil fields, the busiest mountain for miles. The summit looks both ways across the border: the Julian Alps and Triglav to the south, the Austrian Alps to the north.

The most popular approach starts at the Ljubelj pass (1,058 m) via Preval: 2.5–3 hours up, technically easy but a solid 1,000 m of climbing. The other classic rises from the Draga valley near Begunje via the Roblek hut (3–3.5 h) — perfect as a loop. The ridge is exposed to sun and wind; start early in summer and carry plenty of water.

Safety information

  • Technically easy, physically demanding (~1,000 m ascent).
  • Exposed ridge — avoid in storms.
  • Avalanche terrain in winter.
