Slovenia's largest permanent lake — Bled's wild, quiet neighbour with a loop trail, beaches and a view that stops you mid-step.
If Bled is a postcard, Lake Bohinj is wilderness: Slovenia’s largest permanent lake (318 ha) lies in the embrace of Triglav National Park with no island, no lakeside hotels, no pletna boats — just mountains, forest and impossibly clean water that warms up nicely for summer swimming.
The classic is the lake loop: 12 kilometres of mostly flat walking (3–4 hours), along a wild, shady shoreline path on the north side and a sunny southern shore with Triglav views. Start at Ribčev Laz by the famous bridge and Church of St John — one of Slovenia’s most photographed scenes.
In summer, complete the loop with a swim (the loveliest beaches are at Ukanc and Fužina Bay), a visit to the Savica Waterfall or a boat ride across the lake. Bohinj is half an hour’s drive from Bled — and light years away in atmosphere.
