Bled Island

Bled Island was sacred ground long before Christianity arrived: beneath today’s church, archaeologists uncovered the foundations of an early Slavic shrine dedicated to Živa, goddess of love and fertility. Legend holds that only a chosen boatman was allowed to ferry pilgrims to her sanctuary — today’s pletna oarsmen, whose right passes down through a handful of Bled families, are heirs to a thousand-year tradition.

The island’s most famous tale is the legend of the wishing bell: after robbers killed her husband, the young widow Poliksena had a bell cast for the island chapel. A storm caught the boat during the crossing and the bell sank — they say on calm evenings you can still hear it chiming from the lake bed. Grief-stricken, Poliksena entered a convent; after her death the Pope sent the island a new bell with a promise: whoever rings it in Mary’s honour will have a wish granted. Since 1534, Francesco Patavino’s bell has rung tirelessly — and the queue for the rope is the best proof that people still believe.

The third tradition is the most athletic: a groom must carry his bride up the 99 stone steps of the Baroque staircase of 1655 — without resting, while the bride stays silent. Manage it, and the marriage will be happy and lasting. Try guessing how many couples truly succeed while you catch your own breath on the climb.

The Pletna Boat — the Classic Way to Bled Island

The most iconic way across is the pletna, a wooden flat-bottomed boat with a canvas canopy, rowed standing up by oarsmen from a handful of Bled families who inherit the right. Pletnas leave from several jetties (Mlino, the Spa Park, below Grand Hotel Toplice) from morning until sunset — there is no timetable, the boat leaves when it fills up. The ride takes 10–25 minutes, you get 40 minutes on the island, and a return ticket costs around €18.

The Church of the Assumption and the Wishing Bell

At the top of the 99 steps stands the 15th-century Church of the Assumption with its freestanding 52-metre bell tower. A combined ticket for the church and tower costs €12 (children €5) and includes the climb past the fascinating pendulum clock. The star attraction is the wishing bell from 1534 — ring it three times and make a wish.

Row Yourself: By Rental Boat or SUP

If you don’t want to be tied to the 40-minute stop, row over yourself: boat rental on Lake Bled starts at €30/h and it’s only 15–20 minutes of rowing from Mlino, while a SUP on Lake Bled is the sportier option. The island is the only place on the lake where you may land — tie up at the jetty by the staircase.
