Vrba

“O Vrba, happy, dear native village” — with these verses France Prešeren, Slovenia’s greatest poet, immortalised his birthplace and granted it a fame no other Slovenian village possesses. In a modest house with a black kitchen, in 1800, a man was born whose poem “Zdravljica” (A Toast) is today the Slovenian national anthem — the only anthem in the world that celebrates not a nation but friendship among all nations.

Prešeren’s birth house is now a museum preserving the image of an early 19th-century farmhouse: the black kitchen, the icon corner, the cradle. The poet, who spent his city life full of longing and rejection — his muse Julija never returned his love — kept returning in verse to this very place, “the house of my fathers”; every Slovenian schoolchild knows his sonnet on Vrba by heart.

The village itself is a textbook of Gorenjska architecture: sixteen old homesteads arranged around the village linden with stone seats, beneath which the farmers settled village matters for centuries — a parliament under a canopy. Above the village stands the Gothic church of St Mark, and across the fields opens the view of Stol, the highest Karavanke peak. Vrba is 10 minutes from Bled — the shortest possible trip into the very heart of Slovenian culture.
