The cradle of Slovenian nail-forging — a village squeezed into a gorge below Jelovica that spent centuries forging nails for Venetian ships and Europe's cathedrals.
Kropa was a village that rang. For centuries, the narrow gorge of the Kroparica stream echoed with hammers: in two great vigenjc forges driven by waterwheels and in dozens of home hearths, Kropa’s smiths forged more than a hundred kinds of nails from Jelovica iron ore — from tiny cobbler’s tacks to giant ship spikes. Kropa nails held together Venetian galleys, the roof beams of European cathedrals and the sleepers of the first railways — it was said no ship sailed the Adriatic without a Kropa nail in it.
The work was merciless: whole generations, children included, stood at the hearths from dawn to dark, and legend has it that Kropa mothers rocked their babies with the swing of the bellows. When industry made nails cheap, Kropa refused to die — its smiths turned their skill to artistic ironwork, and Kropa masterpieces now adorn the Prešeren monument in Ljubljana, luxury villas and church doors across Europe.
Today the Iron Forging Museum tells the whole story, and during events the fire still burns in the preserved Vigenjc Vice forge as hammers strike the anvil — the sound that defined Kropa for half a millennium. The village is a protected cultural monument and among the most authentic corners of the Gorenjska region.
