About the trail

Trail description

Pokljuka Gorge is what Vintgar was a hundred years ago: wild, silent and free. Glacial water carved a two-kilometre fossil gorge into the limestone — no river runs through it today, so you walk the dry bed between walls up to 50 metres high.

The highlights are the restored wooden galleries pinned to the rock face above the natural window called Pokljuka Hole, and the narrow passage through a stone gate. The circular trail from the village of Krnica near Zgornje Gorje (15 minutes from Bled) takes a good hour of easy walking.

The gorge is freely accessible year-round and nearly empty even in mid-August — the perfect choice when Vintgar is bursting at the seams, or for a quiet family outing with a picnic on a forest clearing.

Safety information

  • The wooden galleries are narrow — walk them one at a time.
  • The stone floor is slippery after rain.
  • In winter snow, micro-spikes are recommended.
