Fishing in Lake Bled: Permits, Prices & the Famous Giant Carp

Among European carp anglers, Lake Bled is quietly legendary: a deep, clear alpine lake that grows enormous carp — fish over 25 kg have been landed here — plus wels catfish, pike and pike-perch, all with a castle on the cliff above your rod tips. Fishing is tightly regulated, which is exactly why it stays this good.

Lake Bled Fishing Permits & Prices

The lake is managed by the local angling club, Ribiška družina Bled, and you need a valid day licence, sold online at ribiskekarte.si and at local sales points:

  • Carp licence — 60 € per day. Two rods allowed; bag limit is one carp up to 7 kg. Baiting and pre-baiting are prohibited — the big fish are effectively catch & release.
  • Predator licence — 45 € per day. One rod; bag limit one pike, catfish or pike-perch.
  • Children under 15 — 13 €, single rod with float.

Licences are personal (name and date) and the rules are enforced — read them before your first cast.

What Makes the Carp Fishing Special

No pre-baiting, gin-clear water and a smart, old fish population make Lake Bled a thinking angler’s venue: this is stalking and precision rather than bivvy-and-bait-boat fishing. The reward is the chance of a genuinely huge, fully scaled wild-living carp with the Julian Alps behind the mat. Autumn is the classic big-fish window — and the lakeshore in October is at its most beautiful anyway.

Practical Tips

Popular swims are along the quieter western and southern shores, away from the swimming areas (in summer, respect the marked bathing zones). Early mornings beat the promenade crowds and the boat traffic. Between bites, the family can take out a rowing boat or walk up to a viewpoint on one of the surrounding trails.

Rivers Nearby: Trout & Grayling

If moving water is more your thing, the emerald Sava Bohinjka flows within minutes of the lake, holding brown trout, grayling and — in winter — the mighty huchen. We cover permits, prices and seasons in our separate guide to fly fishing in Slovenia.
