Ajdna

Ajdna (1,046 m) is the strangest summit above the upper Sava valley: a precipitous rock spur beneath Stol where archaeologists uncovered a late-Roman refuge settlement from the 5th–6th century — locals fled up here from the migrations sweeping the valley. Today you walk among the restored foundations of a chapel and houses on one of the best-presented high-altitude archaeological sites in the Alps, with views across the Sava valley to the Julian Alps.

The trail starts in the village of Potoki between Žirovnica and Jesenice (594 m): 1 hour of determined climbing (+452 m), the final section on rocky terrain secured with steel cables and pegs. Not one for vertigo sufferers — unforgettable for everyone else.
