Špik

Špik (2,472 m) is the mountain you recognise at first glance: a perfect rock pyramid reigning over Gozd Martuljek and Kranjska Gora. Everyone photographs it — few climb it, because the only marked route is a long, serious and partly crumbly test.

The Route — from the Krnica Valley

Approach: Ruski križ to the Krnica Hut

From the small car park at Ruski križ on the Vršič road, an easy 45-minute valley walk leads to the Krnica hut (1,113 m) — an idyllic warm-up that also works as a family stroll to the hut.

The Climb: Hut to Summit

Above the hut it gets real: ~4 hours of steep climbing over scree and rock steps, cables in places but mostly free, crumbly terrain where a helmet is not proverbial but essential. Allow ~9 hours round trip and ~1,670 m. Note: there is no marked hiking route from the Martuljek side — from there you only admire Špik, and the Martuljek waterfalls are its prettier antechamber.

The Hut

A night at the Krnica hut (roughly €20–35, PZS members less) buys you a dawn start — on Špik’s loose terrain that is worth more than an hour of sleep. Open daily in summer, weekends otherwise.

Parking

The car park at Ruski križ on the Vršič road is small — arrive at dawn in summer (which the route demands anyway). Alternative: park in Kranjska Gora, a good hour and a half’s walk from the hut. ~35 min drive from Bled.

Gear and Safety

Mandatory: helmet (rockfall!), mountain boots, via-ferrata set for the secured sections, layers for a cold summit. On the crumbly terrain walk close together or well spread out — never directly above one another. Do not start in rain or with storms forecast. Weather: Bled Live.
