Slovenia's most beautiful mountain pyramid (2,472 m) — a demanding tour from the Krnica valley above Kranjska Gora, for experienced mountaineers.
Špik (2,472 m) is a mountain you recognise at first sight: a perfect rock pyramid reigning over Gozd Martuljek and Kranjska Gora. Photographers worship it from the valley — those who reach its summit discover one of the most beautiful and most serious tours in the Julian Alps.
The standard approach leads from the Krnica valley (car park at the Krnica hut, ~940 m). A pleasant valley path soon turns into a steep climb over scree and rock ledges; the upper section demands UIAA grade I scrambling with complete sure-footedness, as there are no protective cables. With 1,600 vertical metres the tour rivals Triglav — but is far more solitary.
The summit serves one of the greatest panoramas in the Julian Alps: Škrlatica across the valley, Triglav to the south, Austria to the north. Strictly for experienced mountaineers with a helmet; the less experienced should hire a guide — or admire Špik from the trail to the Martuljek waterfalls instead.
