About the experience

Description

Rudno polje on the Pokljuka plateau is the winter classic for those to whom skiing means more than chairlifts: this is Slovenia’s capital of cross-country skiing. Around the Pokljuka Sports Centre — where world-class biathletes train and race — roughly 30 kilometres of groomed tracks await, in classic and skating technique, from gentle beginner loops to rolling forest stages.

Alpine skiing: a small lift with a gentle slope operates by the centre — enough for kids’ first turns, not for a serious ski day. For that, head to Vogel or Kranjska Gora.

For families: sledding on groomed slopes, snowshoeing on marked winter trails and first cross-country steps with equipment rental at the centre. The 1,347 m altitude means the most reliable natural snow around — when Bled is green, Pokljuka is often still white.

Rudno polje is a 30-minute drive from Bled up the Pokljuka road; winter tyres are mandatory. The car park is roomy but occupied or closed during biathlon events — check the event calendar then.
