Radovna Valley

The Radovna Valley is what the Bled area would be without tourism: fifteen kilometres of glacier-carved silence between the Pokljuka and Mežakla plateaus, threaded by a river so emerald that locals simply call it “the green one”. The Radovna rises in a cirque below Triglav, fills Lake Kreda along the way, and finally forces its passage through Vintgar Gorge towards the Sava.

The valley holds one of the oldest homesteads in Triglav National Park: the Pocar homestead, whose house beams bear the year 1609. Today it is a museum telling how people lived for centuries in a valley where winter was the master and the road long remained a cart track. Every object in the house — from the black kitchen to the dowry chests — is original and local.

The valley carries a darker story too: in 1944, German units burned the villages of Radovna, and the roadside memorial preserves the memory of the expelled and the fallen. That layer of history gives the valley its solemn beauty: Radovna is not a backdrop but a place that survived. Today a gentle cycling route follows the old valley road — the loveliest family ride near Bled, past lime trees, chapels and farm stands selling homemade juice.
